Community Advocates for Women’s Reproduction and Children’s Health (CAREC)

Is a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the well-being of women and children in Burundi. CAREC focuses on three key areas: Women’s Leadership, Health, and Community Development. Through its health initiatives, the organization provides essential medical services, including maternal and child health, reproductive health education, family planning, and mental health support. By working with local clinics and healthcare professionals, CAREC ensures that vulnerable populations have access to quality healthcare.

Beyond health, CAREC empowers women to take active roles in leadership, governance, and entrepreneurship. The organization offers training programs, mentorship, and economic opportunities to strengthen women’s decision-making abilities and financial independence. In addition, CAREC promotes sustainable community development by supporting local businesses, vocational training, and income-generating activities. Through these efforts, CAREC fosters strong, self-sufficient communities where women and children can thrive.

Empowering Women Through Fish Farming

On April 15, 2025, CAREC, in partnership with Isezerano Company, trained over 260 women and girls in fish farming to promote self-reliance and improve living conditions. Held in Maramvya, Bujumbura, the training focused on helping participants overcome challenges, form savings groups, and start small businesses. CAREC’s Lorraine Ndayikeza emphasized the importance of including women in fish farming—a sector where they are underrepresented but fully capable. With as little as 3,000,000 Fbu, participants can now launch their own fish farms to provide food and income for their families

A Story to Our Journey

Women’s Leadership Financial independence

Women’s leadership programs

To foster economic empowerment and financial independence, CAREC established self-help groups and women's leadership programs. These initiatives provide training in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and skill development, enabling women to generate sustainable incomes and support their families. By creating a strong network of women leaders, CAREC is strengthening community resilience, promoting gender equality, and encouraging active participation in decision-making processes. These programs continue to uplift women, equipping them with the tools needed to drive social and economic change.

Expanding Services and Community Impact Water Digging and Community Access

Recognizing the urgent need

To ensure reliable clean water for Centre Médical Believe, CAREC installed an internal water source, enhancing hygiene, infection control, and medical procedures. This project strengthens healthcare services, reduces reliance on external supplies, and ensures uninterrupted care for the community. Additionally, it provides safe drinking water for patients, staff, and nearby residents, reducing waterborne diseases and improving overall public health.

Laying the Foundation Building Centre Médical Believe

Infrastructure Development

With a strong foundation in place, we moved from planning to execution by securing initial funding and starting the construction of Centre Médical Believe. Administrative structures were established, and operational guidelines were developed. We also acquired essential medical equipment and launched pilot programs focusing on maternal health, reproductive education, and gender-based violence prevention. This period was crucial in transforming our vision into a tangible reality.

Strategic Planning and Initial Mobilization

In 2021 – 2022, CAREC was born out of a vision to provide accessible healthcare, prevent gender-based violence, and empower women in underserved communities. During this period, we focused on research, stakeholder engagement, and developing partnerships to establish a strong foundation. The idea of Centre Médical Believe was conceptualized as a sustainable solution to address critical healthcare needs.
